ORIGINALLEIGH WIENER(1929-1993) 'BILLIE HOLIDAY GETTING HER CIGARETTE LIT' PHOTOGRAPH - SIGNED BY THE ARTIST INSCRIBED TO JERRY TALMER, FOUNDING EDITOR OF THE VILLAGE VOICE
This is a wonderful original piece. This is one of those works I probably wished I was going to keep for my personal collection but it really doesnt fit anywhere that I could hang it. And it really should be in a collection where it would be really appreciated. For those not familiar with Leigh Wiener, I have included his biography below. This photograph actually comes from the estate of Jerry Talmer. Talmer was one of the founding editors of the Village Voice in New York City. This actually one of the artist's most famous images. You can actually see this photo on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. In fact, that is the only other place I was able to find another original example of this photo. Image measures 9 1/4 x 11 5/8 on sheet measuring 10 5/8 x 11 5/8 inches. Outstanding original condition. Archival hinged into backing and matte.
Signed, dated and inscribed to Jerry Talmer in ink in the bottom margin of the sheet. Verso has the original artist's stamp as well as other notations including "Not for Sale". The original photo and negative was from 1954. This is a later printing, though definitely a lifetime work as this has the artist's original signature. My understanding is this was printed in the 1980s. Do your own research on this photograph. Truly a special special piece. FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES!
For those not familiar with the photographer, his biography from one of the many galleries that offer his photographs reads: "
During his 50-year career as a photographer and photojournalist, Leigh Wiener photographed every U.S. president from Truman to Reagan, Hollywood legends from Marilyn to Marlon and musicians from Miles to Sinatra. After moving to Los Angeles in 1946, Wiener went on to become a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times before shooting freelance for Life, Time, Fortune and Sports Illustrated. He created and co-hosted the Emmy-winning television show “Talk about Pictures” on KNBC. Wiener’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery. He passed away in 1993, leaving behind a rich archive of images that uniquely captures the second half of the 20th century.
