The Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire basilica is the second in date of the three basilicas of Lourdes, the most important center of pilgrimage in the Hautes-Pyrénées and France, since the apparitions of Lourdes. Consecrated in 1901, it is called the "lower basilica" to distinguish it from the basilicas respectively designated "upper" (Basilica of the Immaculate Conception) and "underground" (Basilica of Saint Pius X), all three forming part of the complex of the Sanctuaries of Lourdes which still includes the Sainte-Bernadette church, the latest of its places of worship and number of chapels. It should also be noted that Lourdes also has a parish church in the town centre, the Church of the Sacred Heart, the construction of which was initiated by Father Dominique Peyramale, parish priest of Lourdes at the time of the apparitions of the Virgin.
