The Espélugues Way of the Cross is a monumental Way of the Cross located in Lourdes, on the hill of Espélugues, to the south and close to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.
The hill of Espélugues, part of the domain of the sanctuaries of Lourdes, is separated from the central part by the avenue Mgr Théas and the Route de la Forêt; it dominates, to the south, the three basilicas. The Espélugues farmhouse which extends over the hill was acquired by the missionaries responsible for the sanctuaries in 1869.
The Stations of the Cross, featuring characters slightly larger than life (about 2 m high), winds through trees and rocks on a course of about 1,500 meters, climbing up to the 13th station then descending from faster way. It includes the fourteen traditional stations which evoke the passion of Christ, from his condemnation to his burial, plus a fifteenth station, the resurrection of Christ, added in 1958.
The characters, 115 in number, are in bronze, and made by the Raffl house. Most of the stations are gifts from dioceses in France, others from foreign nations (the 4th by Germans, the 10th by Hungarians and the 14th by Italians).
The first station was installed in 1901 and the solemn inauguration of the Stations of the Cross took place on September 14 and 15, 1912, dates of the feasts of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and of Our Lady of Sorrows.
