The monastery of the Grande Chartreuse is the first monastery and the motherhouse of the monks-hermits of the Carthusian order. It is located in the town of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, in Isère, at the foot of Grand Som, the fourth highest peak in the Chartreuse massif.
The establishment of the Carthusians in the massif which gave them their name makes this site the type of Carthusian monastic space, although the order has accommodated itself since the 13th century to urban sites and houses located in the plain, even At the seaside.
