    Description

ORIGINAL 1892 CHARLES DUDLEY ARNOLD (1844-1927) 'COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION FINE ARTS BUILDING CHICAGO' MAMMOTH PLATINUM PRINT PHOTOGRAPH
This is a great piece.  I have actually been buying a lot of photography lately.  Sort of a mix of historical and art photographs from the 19th and 20th Century.  This is one of those photographs that crosses over both areas.  This is an important photograph of Chicago during the Columbian Exposition.  For those not familiar with the photographer or the history of the photograph, I have included the history below. This is I believe one of the mammoth plate platinotypes he did of the finished construction for the fair.  The visible image within the matte measures 14 3/4 x 19 inches.  Copyright 1892 and Arnolds name are within the image lower right corner.  A beautiful original photograph that is clean and crisp with great original contrast.  Beautiful condition with just a few very faint spots in the sky.  Original matte shows some issues and should be replaced.  It shows some rippling so I dont believe it is laid down over the photograph.  It probably has left a matte line around the outer edge where it comes in contact with the photograph.  I actually also think it is the original blond oak frame which is very complimentary and really a beautiful presentation.  I have not taken off the cardboard backing but you can see the original mount in there that seems to measure 21 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches.  Frame measures 25 x 29 inches.  Do your own research on this rare Chicago photograph.
For those not familiar with the artist and the history of this photograph, I have included the description that accompanied an album that included this photograph that sold at Swann galleries (about ,000 for 37 photographs) back in 2014: "
In 1892, Chicago's Director of Works Daniel Burnham hired C.D. Arnold, who was characterized by Alfred Stieglitz as "an obscure Buffalo photographer," to photograph the construction of the Columbia Exposition (of 1893).
Arnold was a promising architectural photographer who had worked for many of the prominent architects chosen to design buildings on the site. The beauty of his images reflect his aesthetic sophistication; the images are handsomely composed and a few recall works by Durandelle.
Arnold produced an impeccable series of construction views, and an equivalent set of views of the finished Fair, most of which were and are best seen as the mammoth-plate platinotypes that formed the first "edition" of the work. Sets of these views are rare and were distributed intermittently to a number of public collections."
CHECK THE PICTURES ON THIS GREAT PIECE.  DONT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY.
